Course

Description:                  A supervised field experience in a criminal justice program or agency.  Student will work a minimum of 15 hours per week at a variety of task that reflect work performed in that program or agency.  The students also attend a weekly seminar to discuss experience and complete assigned project related to their field experience.

 

Most agencies require background investigation prior to

the internship.  This may involved a criminal records check, fingerprinting, or a polygraph depending on the agency.

 

Students may be exposed to information of a confidential nature.  This information must not be shared outside of the assigned agency without the permission of the supervising representative of the agency.

 

Intern

Seminar                        Criminal Justice Internship Seminar (CMRJ256) will be conducted via the Blackboard program.  Internet availability is required.  This process will require students accessing the cyber classroom at least once per week with assignments and discussion.  If you do not have internet capability, please see instructor prior to the first class.  An orientation to the Blackboard process will be available by contacting instructor prior to the first week of class.

Attendance:                  REGULAR ATTENDANCE IS MANDATORY.  Students will contact site supervisor and set schedule for completing the 30 hours per credit (15 hours per week).  After setting schedule, students will be responsible to contact site if they are not able to attend.  Excessive absences may result in removal from internship program with a failing grade.  Punctuality is also a grade consideration.

 

Course

Work:                          Students will prepare or modify an intern manual specific to the site outlining internship expectations and resource manual.  It shall contain a check list of task performed and reference material as applicable.

Objectives:                   Prepare application and/or resume for intern position.

                                    Experience process of entrance interviews for Criminal Justice Position.

                                    Observe and perform assigned duties while working at a Criminal Justice Site.

                                    Discuss Criminal Justice task and opportunities with other interns

                                    Discuss academic instruction to practical experience

 

Evaluation:                    Grades are based on:

                                                End of quarter evaluation reports from intern site.

                                                Attendance and participation in Criminal Justice 256

 

                                                Agency Evaluations =   150 points

Expectations

And Considerations:     Conservative business attire is required at all times while working in the agency unless otherwise directed by the agency supervisor.  There are certain risks inherent in working with criminal justice agencies as a student intern.  These risks include, but are not limited to:

                                    Assault by prisoners or suspects, auto accidents, injuries from firearms, edged weapons or other criminal assaults, dog bites, exposure to chemical agents, weather conditions, or medical dangers including exposure to communicable diseases, needles, etc.)

 

                                    Students may not be enrolled as an intern until a signed human subject form has been submitted to the instructor.
