My background:

I have worked in several different fields and gone to school several times since I first graduated from college (University of California, Berkeley) in 1974. After college, I spent a year living in Israel, working for the Israeli Environmental Protection Service. After earning a masters degree in therapeutic recreation (San Francisco State University, 1978), I worked for several years as a recreational therapist, working with developmentally disabled adults and children in community programs, and working in the rehabilitation ward of a hospital. When jobs became scarce in that field, I went back to school to earn a MS in Biology (Eastern Washington University, 1985), and then a PhD in Botany (University of Washington, 1994). Since 1984, I have been teaching biology and botany at the college level. I have been teaching at EvCC since 1992.

Activities and interests:

I love being outdoors and learning about the other living organisms around me.  I hike and walk whenever time allows, and in the fall of 2003 I was very fortunate to be able to spend 6 weeks traveling through New Zealand as part of a sabbatical leave. I learned a tremendous amount about the plants and animals in that part of the world.   As part of my interest in native plants, I have served on the state board of the Washington Native Plant Society  for about 10 years.

Besides biology and botany, I play folk music on several stringed instruments and am a member of the Seattle Mandolin Orchestra .
